Marlon gets support to connect with his culture

Marlon is a proud Biripi man from the Taree area of New South Wales.

These days, with support from our Aboriginal Home Care team, Marlon can do more of the things he loves, including swimming, shopping and bowling.

Marlon says: “I enjoy swimming, listening to the radio and cultural activities like trying bush tucker.”

Marlon, who is partly blind and has an intellectual disability, has been able to get more in touch with his culture since recently transitioning to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

His Home Care Worker Donna explains that, now Marlon has the freedom to do what he wants, he has become far more motivated and active.

Donna says: “Now that he has an NDIS package, Marlon is getting so much more support, and Australian Unity has been great at creating new activities to meet his needs.”

Celebrating culture

We recognise and understand the important connection that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have to their community, culture and country.

At Australian Unity, reconciliation matters to us. Our Reconciliation Action Plan outlines how we are playing our part.

We support our clients to take part in local community events and activities. We also host regular Yarn Ups and celebrations to mark national events such as NAIDOC Week, Reconciliation Week and Sorry Day.
